Eric Atkinson

Eric Atkinson is our transplanted Nova Scotian. A native of Quebec, this bilingual Canadian arrived on the shores of Antigonish County some 10 years ago, foregoing a busy tax practice in the City of Montreal so that his wife could accept a professorship at St. F.X. University. The Quebec bar's loss was Mac, Mac & Mac's gain.

A graduate of Laval University Law School in 1980, Eric later broadened his academic credentials with a Diploma from the University of Amsterdam in 1987. He is trained in civil law, common law and European law. Leaving law school, Eric commenced his legal career at the top, articling with the Supreme Court of Canada. Admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1982, Eric gained an insider's perspective of our tax regime by working for several years as tax counsel for Revenue Canada in Ottawa. He then joined the Montreal business law firm of Lapointe Rosenstein, where his exposure to the inner workings of Revenue Canada became an invaluable asset to his clients in the private sector.

For more than 20 years, Eric has practised almost exclusively in matters of tax and business law, with an increasing emphasis on issues of succession planning within a business context. Since joining Mac, Mac & Mac as our tax counsel in 1994, Eric has been serving the business needs of clients right across mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, as well as commuting to the Province of Quebec to service the continuing needs of loyal clients. In 2004, Eric became a partner of Mac, Mac & Mac.

Like others who have chosen Northern Nova Scotia to find a lifestyle balance, Eric is a fervent user of the natural resources of both Nova Scotia and Quebec. His idea of a good vacation is to cross country ski across the breadth of Ellesmere Island, relying upon his own ingenuity, grit and resourcefulness to survive the unforgiving terrain of our Far North. When Eric is not training for one of his international marathons or the National Cross Country Ski Marathon, he may be found blazing a hiking trail through the backwoods of Antigonish County or the Highlands of Cape Breton. He is an avid sailor who is happiest when testing the limits of his physical endurance, whether as Taskmaster of the perennial, prize winning Mac, Mac & Mac Dragon Boat Team, or as crew for the International Cross-Atlantic Sailing Race from Quebec City to St. Malo, France. Most of all, he is a committed family man who lives life with gusto, whether in serving the demands of his clients or the needs of his community.

Eric Atkinson is Past President of the French Lawyers Association of Nova Scotia, has served the Nova Scotia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and is Past President of the Parents Association of école acadienne de Pomquet. He is active in the Antigonish Area Partnership and has been instrumental in the development of various business initiatives in Antigonish County.

Eric has extensive experience in various forms of tax litigation, including constitutional challenges to our tax regime. He is author of various articles in tax journals and a lecturer at St. F.X. University. In the face of such extensive professional and personal credentials, Eric's partners like to tease him that his only observable flaw is his assumption that the rest of the world shares his passion for the intricacies and nuances of our arcane tax regime.
